This month’s Sephora subscription box was all about eyes. Called “The Eye Openers”, all the items (5 deluxe samples and a sample fragrance) came in a cute little cotton pouch with winking eyes and the quote “Wink outside the box.” I was pretty excited for this box as I like eye makeup and eye creams, so I couldn’t wait to see what they put together. So let’s get into what I got!
Make Up For Ever Artist Shadow in I-544 (“Pink Granite”, $21)- Highly saturated iridescent pink granite eyeshadow made with a unique gel-powder formula with ultra fine pigments for smooth color. I would describe this color as a taupey type color with a pink cast. This color is quite interesting because it doesn’t look pink at all considering the name. It’s creamy and shimmery (iridescent) with no glitter particles. I would have like to have seen a bit more pigment in this shade, but it could have been the sample. I had to swatch it twice on my hand just to see the the color. I believe this will be a light to medium shade on the lid. A good all over the lid shade or in the crease for a little extra definition. This is definitely a wearable shade for me.
Urban Decay Perversion Mascara ($22)– Lengthening and volumizing mascara coats lashes with triple-black pigment and build able creamy formula. I have tried this mascara before with the one that came in the Urban Decay Naked On The Run palette and it’s not bad. A lot like Tarte’s Lights Camera Lashes to me, it makes lashes look full without being clumpy. It doesn’t flake or smear and it is fairly easy to remove at the end of the day. I’m glad to have a travel size.
Sephora Collection Contour Eye Pencil 12hr Wear Waterproof in Love Affair ($10)– Creamy easy to apply pencil with long lasting 12 hour waterproof formula in a shimmering plum shade that was handpicked for you. Handpicked for me huh? #liars Because the pencil I got says “15 Flirting Game Taupe”. I have to say the plum sounds nice, but the taupe color is pretty nice too and also falls under the shimmer category. I think this color would be especially nice for lining the lower lash line when you don’t want a dark harsh black. For me this is ok- it’s creamy and glides on, it is in fact long wearing and doesn’t smear or budge. I like liners, but am very partial to retractable liners. I HATE to have to sharpen liners because I end up wasting product when I can’t get it sharpened quite right and have to keep sharpening it. This pencil doesn’t even look big enough to handle that. #itwillbeanub
Algenist Eye Renewal Balm ($68)– Soothing and moisturizing eye cream visibly reduces dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles with anti-aging Alguronic Acid -a powerful chemical compound that occurs in microalgae and help to regenerate and protect the skin. This description make me super excited to try out this eye cream because it sounds like it works magic. I definitely have been on the look out for one eye cream that could handle dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles so if this works I would be willing to buy a full size jar. #skepticalofmiracles Although this sample jar looks small, it is actually about half the size of the normal size, making it’s retail value $34. Very generous Sephora! #ihopeitworksout
Lancome Energie De Vie Smoothing & Glowing Care Moisturizer ($55)– Concentrated energizing liquid lotion visually relieves dullness, diminishes signs of fatigue, and promotes a healthy looking glow. Liquid Lotion is a skincare staple that hails from Asia and is known for moisturizing and nurturing with a liquid form that is easy for skin to soak up. Place a few drops in your hands and press into your face. This liquid lotion contains Goji berry and lemon balm to energize skin and protect it from environmental stressors. WHAT?! What is this? #imconfused Ok so I am hip to some Asian beauty trends, but this was way off my radar. When I saw this I had no idea what this was from what’s written on the sample tube. To be honest, this sounds very gimmicky to me. It does not sound moisturizing enough for my normal/dry skin and it doesn’t seem like someone with oily skin would want to be “glowing” so I’m a little confused how this fits in to skincare. Guess I’ll try it and figure it out! #imupforthechallenge
Fragrance: CLEAN Reserve Warm Cotton Reserve ($90 3.4 oz)– Bright and pure blend of understated floral and musk, reminiscent of the soft scent of fresh linens. As fancy as they want to make this sound, it smells like you rubbed Tide Detergent all over yourself. It is a very strong detergent type smell, which smells clean and nice -just like laundry detergent or “fresh linens”. It’s not a bad smell/fragrance, I just like perfume to be a little more sophisticated than this scent. I really wish I had received the CLEAN Reserve Blonde Rose version because I am partial to rose fragrances anyway and would have liked to have tried that one instead. #ohwell It’s ok though because the fragrance samples are just a bonus item to me. #imhereforthemakeup
This box has some interesting things to try, but it didn’t wow me at first sight. I will update if something does. Don’t get me wrong though, I like at least 4 of the 5 things (with the lancome liquid lotion on the table) so that makes it worth it to me to still get the box. I would definitely recommend to others as I enjoy this beauty subscription box a 100 times more than ipsy. I think my favorite so far was the first box I got, which was June’s box.
